Transmission Troubles Leave Annett with 24th Place Finish at Road America Race Contact: Maggie Martin, Rising Star Management Group, mmartin@risingstarmg.com
Elkhart Lake, Wis. (June 21, 2010) – The NASCAR Nationwide Series made stock car racing history this weekend as the first NASCAR sanctioned series to race at Road America’s 4.048 mile road course. In NASCAR’s first ever race at its longest track, Michael Annett and the No. 15 Germain.com team went road course racing on the 14 turn course in Saturday’s Bucyrus 200 presented by Menards.
Annett’s road race qualifying effort started him 22nd for the 50 lap race.
The first caution came out on lap two and the No. 15 Germain.com Camry came to pit road for fuel only. Restarting the race 31st on lap four, Annett began to work his way back through the field. Making the call to come to pit road under green flag conditions on lap 10, crew chief Ryan Fugle ordered the No. 15 Germain.com Toyota Camry to take four tires and fuel on their second stop of the day.
A lap later, the yellow flag was thrown bringing out a full course caution. With the majority of the field coming to pit road, Annett gained valuable track position and restarted eighth due to Fugle’s strategy on the previous lap.
Battling a severely tight handling race car and a transmission issue, Annett managed his way around the 14 turn course until the caution flag was again displayed on lap 26. With guidance from his spotter, Mark Kincaid, Annett cleared the multi-car pileup in turn six that brought out the red flag for over 30 minutes.
Before the track went back to green, Annett headed back to pit road for fresh tires, fuel and adjustments to fix the tight condition of the racecar. With less than half of the race remaining, the caution was again thrown on lap 30. Fugle opted for the team to take fuel only on their next stop, restarting the No. 15 Germain.com Camry eighth.
Despite having track position on his side, Annett was faced with gear box problems. Forced to stay out on the course and just attempt to survive with the transmission trouble, Annett drove to a 24th place finish. He remains 14th in the Nationwide Series point race, 104 points away from the top-10.
After making both left and right hand turns and adjusting to pitting on the opposite side of the car than normal, the No. 15 Germain Racing team will be back to circle track racing in the coming week. With three consecutive weekends of non-companion races under their belts, the Nationwide Series will again join with the Sprint Cup circuit this coming weekend at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The Nationwide Series New England 200 airs live on ESPN at 2:30 p.m. ET on Saturday.
